Thanksgiving 2011

Thanksgiving is always a blast. This year we had dinner at Grandma and Grandpa Kirby's house. It is amazing how many people, chairs, and tables that we can fit in the house. It just shows that there is a lot of love in this family. Luckily the weather has been a warm fall so we were able to go out and play.

The day after I completed summer school at InTech Collegiate High School, I had a job interview at Mt. Ogden Jr. High. We had an adoption appointment that morning at 9 am and my interview at 11 am. I arrived late to the interview and could not get a hold of anyone to let them know. Great first impression. The interview went great. I got real emotional a few times when I started to talk about my experiences at InTech. I did not realize how much I was going to miss InTech. After the interview I received a phone call 30 minuets after we had left offering me the position. I accepted the position just before going to Maui. I am teaching Common Core 9th grade (Algebra 1/Geometry), Geometry, and Algebra 2. It has been a challenge.

After returning home from Maui we were preparing to go to Macks Inn and Dave was doing his normal search for jobs. The night before we left he came across a intern job posting for the Department of Defense at Hill Air Force Base. He applied and forgot about it. In September Dave received an email stating that he was a possible candidate for a engineering position. Shortly after he received a job offer with no interview. Dave already had a job working at a Teacher Assistant at the U of U so he worked two jobs for a week or two starting at Hill the end of October. Hill is not Dave's dream job but he is getting the hang of it.

It is amazing to look back on the past few months to watch the Lord's hand in our life. He guides us and directs us in very unique ways. I am very grateful for His love.

Road to Hana

One of our favorite days in Maui started before sunrise and ended really late. We traveled the Road to Hana. The Road to Hana is a 68 mile stretch of road averaging 25 mph. It would take about 2.5 hours to drive with no stops but of course we had to stop for a lot of the beauties of Maui. It was fantastic! The highway has approximately 620 switch backs and is very narrow passing over 59 bridges, 46 of which are only one-lane bridges. You could see waterfalls from the road.

we were not to stop and take pictures. Luckily there was no one, as far as we
could see with all the switch backs, near us.

This was our first little adventure. We took a small little trail and found waterfall #1. It started our day out right.

The trees here are amazing! All I wanted to do to the colorful tree was feel it. I thought that they would be silky smooth. They were still sort of rough. There are trees like the one below everywhere. They are huge with "vines" or roots going everywhere.

At the end of the Hana Highway is the "seven Sacred Pools". It was amazing!
People would jump off the cliffs into the water. It was fun to watch.

Huge trees and thick bamboo. It got really dark in the bamboo when we were coming home. When it was raining, we were never touch because of the think bamboo. The whistling of the bamboo was great.

The most exciting part of the adventure was our hike to the beautiful 400 feet Waimoku Falls. We started on our hike a little late and was afraid that we would not make it back to the car before dark but we went any way. And boy was it worth it. I screamed like a little girl. What an amazing day!

Maui in July

Every year Dave and I are blessed to be able to go on a big vacation. It is sort of our celebration for making it through another school year and this year is a celebration of Dave completing his undergraduate work at Utah State. We went to Maui from July 12th - July 21st. It was not long enough. We had the best time! Our hotel - Days Inn - was right on the beach. We walked out our room and walked 20 feet and there was beach!

Since we were so close to the beach we went swimming daily. Dave got really good at boggie boarding. It was so fun to watch him. I tried several times but did not enjoy getting salt up my noise and mouth. The water was like a warm bath. We spent hours in the water. Dave even let me read and relax on the beach, he even joined me sometimes!

'Iao Needle and the Valley that was looking out. We thought that it was going to be a long hike. We were wrong it was a 5 min walk. It was beautiful!

This was the coolest blow hole! The day or two before there was a 30 -40 year old man that fell in and could not be found.

The trees there were amazing. This is all one tree taking a whole block in Lahaina.

Haleakala Crater - active, but not currently erupting, volcano that last released its fury in 1790. The summit rises 10,023 feet above sea level whereas the elevation of Kaysville is 4,357 feet. We wanted to go hiking but we could not breath very well. We both got really light headed. But it was sure beautiful. All of Maui is at your feet.

Good food is always a must on any vacation. Freds Mexican Cafe
is where we dined most. It was delicious!

We dream of Maui often. Hopes for next summer! We LOVE vacations!

Chelsea and I have decided that we are packing up and moving to go to school at the U of U. There I will be in the masters program for Mechanical Engineering. The also offered us a TA position that will pay for school, 80% of my insurance, and a stipend to live off of. We feel so very blessed to receive this blessing in our lives.

Chelsea and I live an exciting life. She is so good to me and lets me go and see musicals. Our latest adventure was The Lion King. It was amazing. The very first song the spot light got in my eyes so I turned and there was an elephant leg right in front of my face. Kind of scary. Oh and Becky and Mont wanted to show us what fine dinning is and took us to Flemmings. Wow what an amazing dinner. The best stake I have ever had. AND IT WAS HUGE. Everything was wonderful. Thanks for showing us fine dinning Becky and Mont.

Day 6 Wednesday 28th

This was not our best day in Haw

aii. In fact far from it. This was our first day of taking TheBus everywhere. It s

tarted off good. We meet a guy who loved to talk about Hawaii and gave

us a bus map with a okay schedule on it. We had a pretty good idea of the schedule but this helped a lot. We ended up at the famous Hawaiian swap meet first. Chelsea found a lot of "cannot live without" deals which I just loved. She needs to spend a little bit of money on herself outside her birthweek. (She goes on a shopping spree the whole week after Christmas for here birthday.)

We next headed out on the bus to our next destination the Dole Planation. We hav

e heard that you just have to try the pineapple ice cream. I am gla

d we tried it but neither one of us loved it. We did not do anything else but look around the shop they had there.

We then headed off on TheBus to the Polynesian Cultural Center. This was a two hourish bus ride and wow we flet it. We did get to see North Shore and Turtle Bay but it was a long ride. Our passes to the Center were good for three days so we took advantage of that. The high light was going and seeing the temple and learning about the church in Hawaii. On the way home we saw Johnny Depp and the Filming of Pirates 4. Cool stuff there.

Day 7 Thursday 29th

This was the best day because we spent it at the ocean. We got to snorkeled at Hanama Bay. This bay has all sorts of fish that are colorful and just fun to see. I love being in the water to this was paradise to me.

For dinner we wanted to find a local restaurant and each a local meal. We failed to find something we wanted at the cafe and headed to get some dessert before dinner. We went to the Famous Lennard's to get a malasada (over glorified doughnut).

They were okay and they we grabbed some burgers and shakes at Teddy's Burger.

Day 8 Friday 30th

Chelsea loves to hike and hike we did. We hiked the famous Diamond Head trail which was beautiful. It included about 276 stairs. It was a lot of fun and our Chacos held up great for the hike.

Diamond Head was not all the green and Chelsea really wanted

to see a waterfall. So we went on a hike through the rainforest.

It was amazing. Nature is so awesome to me I don't know how people cannot believe in God. These things could not just happen.

Our day ended with an amazing firework show.

Day 9 Saturday 30th

Our last day in Hawaii. We spent the morning swimming in the ocean and just enjoying our last day. We sat on the grass and watched volleyball and ate. The plane ride was long but we made it home.

Here is the rundown of our fantastic vacation in Oahu:

Day 1 Friday 23^rd

We slept at Dave’s parents house so poppie could take us to the airport at 5:30 in the morning. Our flight left at 7 a.m. to Phoenix with a layer over there for an hour. Then came the 6 and ½ hour flight to Honolulu. We arrived there at 2:30 local time. We stayed at the Equus Hotel, which had a nice view of the city and of the ocean. We did not check in to our hotel until almost four o’clock and we were really tired so we walked around Waikiki and found a really good wrap place for dinner. Seeing how we had been up for over 17 hours by this time, we crashed hard that night about 8:30 Hawaii time.This is the view from the side of our hotel. Across the canal (5 minute walk) was Ala Monana Mall which is the world's largest open-air shopping center with over 290 stores and restaurants. Dave's favorite was of course the apple store. We went to two of them but not for very long.

Day 2 Saturday 24^th

In the morning we attended went to Hard Rock Café to hear of what we could do in Hawaii. That is where we scheduled the Home of the Brave tour (Pearl Harbor). Afterwards we took a tour of a pearl factory. We learned how pearls are harvested and watched how jewelry is made. It was pretty cool. As we looked at the jewelry on the display floors we saw prices of thousands of dollars. Needless to say we did not stay long. That afternoon we went to the beach and had some yummy ice cream from Lapperts, recommendations from Kari.

This is the man made Lagoon behind the Hilton. We did not sleep at the Hilton but we sure enjoyed walking through their Hotels, watching their fireworks, and using their ocean. The lagoon was a 5 minute walk from our Hotel. All of the beaches were open to everyone, except Hanauma Bay.

Koi fish were everywhere and they were huge! They reminded me of the Avatar: The Last Air Bender.

Day 3 Sunday 25^th

Sunday morning we walk about 20 minutes to church. What beautiful landscape. As you walked in through the gate there was a long reflection pool guiding your eye to mural of Christ. Classrooms were along the side inside the building, while the hallways and courtyard was outside. There was a beautiful tree in front too!

Day 4 Monday 26^th

Monday and Tuesday were my favorite days. They were packed full! Monday we went to the Polynesian Culture Center. We hopped on the bus at 9:20 and arrive at the PCC about 11:30. There we meet Benson, friend of the Mac’s from our ward. Benson was able to help us get a great deal for the day. The doors opened at noon and we shortly lost track of the time. Every hour there were shows of the different cultures. We learned how to build fire with just sticks, climb coconut trees, cooking, songs, hula, drum, weaving, spear tossing, and lots more! It was an amazing day. We also went to the luau and had lots of Kalua pork. Following dinner we went to the Ha: The Breath of Life show. Fantastic! Dave’s favorite part was the fire dance.

Day 5 Tuesday 27^th

We started bright and early Tuesday morning catching our Home of the Brave tour at 6 am. Our guide was absolutely amazing. He told story upon story about WWII. As we drove down the highway he would point at a landmarks and tell fantastic stories on what took place there during WWII. He mentioned that everything there has a story. I usually hate history but this tour was remarkable!

They predict that the USS Arizona had approximately 100 thousand gallons of oil when it was attacked. They estimate that there is approximately 50 thousand gallons of oil currently with a leak of roughly 2 gallons a day.

The picture of the United State Army Pacific is really cool. There are 12 stars 7 on one side of the red arrow with 4 and 1 on the other. This symbolizes bloody (red) war December 7, 1941 in the ocean (blue) from the east to the west (arrow).

Test Scores

I just heard great news! All of my AP Calculus students passed the test!!! They earned three 5’s (which is the highest score that you can receive) three 4’s and one 3. Yes, I know that this is a small class, but it is bigger than last years group where five of six passed. This year I should have about 15 students. It is these kinds of moments that I really enjoy teaching. I am so very proud of them!

Mack's Inn 2010

Every year we go up to Mack's Inn for a week in July. It is a blast! Great company, great food, great rides, and a beautiful view. It was really quite this year. Jeff, Kari and the babies, as well as Mont, Becky and the girls could not come. We were able to take Sara and Tanner up with us, so that gave us a little bit of noise while camping. Sara was gone most of the time playing with cousins while Tanner was trying to put out the fire with his water gun or watching movies.

Both Sara and Tanner were trying to protect themselves from the wind and Dave trying to help us move. We sat at one spot for about 10 min, wind pushing one way and the current the other. It usually takes about an hour to go down, this time easily a hour and a half.

The last time that we went down max, I wished that I would have brought my camera. We saw three different bald eagles, two perched on trees, one in the distance above its nest, and the other close to the river and the third one flying. Jana had a great one way conversation with one. I think that the eagle was ignoring her because it never came down for the ride. We also saw four deer jumping across the river. It was beautiful. That was the most wildlife that I had seen on the whole trip.

Jana is a great cook! She has most the meals pre-made when camping and are delicious! We had fried turkey, ribs, french toast, pancakes, homemade donuts, poppers, and so much more!

Tanner had a great time putting the fire out. Once it was out he would ask for another fire.

I don't think there has been a trip that I have not seen Scott fixing or maintaining a motorized vehicle. He does a great job with all his scooters and cars. Dave, grandpa and Scott went on many four-wheeler/motorcycle rides.

Sunday Dave, Scott and I were able to attend church up there. There were roughly 2000 people in attendance. It was amazing. There are two buildings where sacrament is held and both were filled. As we entered the church there were people everywhere. It was full in all the primary rooms, the nursery, halls and probably in the mothers room and bathroom. Any where a there was a chair there was a body. If the fire marshal were to enter during the meeting, we would have been in big trouble. It is just amazing that there are members everywhere you go.

We are looking forward to next July!

Dave:
Dave has just finished his junior year at Utah State University studying Mechanical Engineering. He was super busy taking 15 credit hours. One of his classes was a design class where groups were formed and they had to choose a project to design and next semester build it. His groups original choice was to design and build a man powered airplane, which had to be approved by several professors because of the difficulty. When Dave and I were dating, he had mentioned many academic dreams/goals but two of which were to attend USU and to build a man powered airplane. So I have been excited to participate and see his dreams come true! At the beginning of the semester I found it fun to see his excitement increase. As the team continued their research, they reached a conclusion that building an airplane was out of the range for them currently. With great heartache, they decided to focus on just the fusil lodge of the airplane and things look to be great. They will start building it come September 2010.
This summer Dave has had the great opportunity to continue his employment at Thermo Fisher in Logan. He loves is there. The people are great to work with and fun the hangout with after work (playing volleyball of course). He is not working as an engineer, but has managed a way to work with several engineers. He has learned so much this summer. He has just recently been saying that he would enjoy working there if a position opens up as an engineer.
Dave is also studying to take the GRE at the end of August. We will be filling out graduate forms shortly for MIT, USU, and others. We will also be filing out job applications come November-January. Wherever the wind takes us we will go. I am so very grateful for Dave and all of his hard work. He is an amazing husband and I love him.

Chelsea:
I have completed my second year of teaching! I am amazed at what a difference one year of teaching can have. My first year was awful. I was positive that I was never going to teach again in my life. Somehow I came back this year and it was stressful at times but overall it was a really good year. I had great support from my co-workers and I was more familiar with the expectations, curriculum and there was not big changes during the school year, such as losing a math teacher and me having to pick up the slack (STRESS). Last year I taught Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus, Concurrent Enrollment Math 1050/1060, and AP Calculus. In Geometry 90% of my students passed the end of level test, Algebra 2 is still unknown, the large majority in Precalculus were enrolled is CE and did excellent, and AP results should be here any day now. It was really a good year but still a lot of late, late nights. Next year I hope that it will be even better and once I take my PLT exam in September, will be a level 2 “experienced” teacher.

Funny Story

So Thursday night we left a load of laundry in the dryer outside on our porch. I had forgotten this Friday morning until after I had gotten into the shower and started to get dressed. I had no pants. So being the smart one that I am, I just wrapped a towel over me so I could get the clothes out of the dryer. So I am in my towel getting the clothes out and turned to go back in and saw the door shut. I turned the handle and it was locked. What do I do now? A panic came over me. Dave is at school, my keys and phone are inside, and I have to be to work in 30 minutes. I ran over to our good friends and neighbors house to see if I could use there phone to talk to Dave and finish actually getting pants on so I looked somewhat decent. No answer. Ran back to our apartment and put my pants on behind the dryer, hopefully no one saw, then ran over to the MASA office to get some help. No good. No one is there until 10 A.M. Finally, as I was coming back, I saw Earl in the parking lot who is an RA and has keys. I yelled "Earl, I need some help!" at the top of my lungs. I am just lucky that he is nice and let me in. I finally got back to getting ready for the day 15 minutes later. What a good way to start a morning. No worries I made it to school late but on time (before first period.)

Things that I've done!

I have been enjoying every minute of my summer. I love being able to do what I want to do. So far

• I’ve been able to spend more time with my sweet, sweet husband.
o We’ve been on several bike rides. Thanks Britty for the bike! My bottom is really sore and I am so out of shape but it is tons of fun!
o Played sand volleyball every night. Monday we played with some people from his work and every Tuesday we play with friends from Aggie Village. Soccer is Wednesdays and Thursdays.
• I’ve planned a menu for the next two weeks with a bunch of new recipes. My new favorite website is kraftfoods.com. It has quick and easy recipes that actually look good. We had the Quick-fix Beef Burito Skillet meal last night. It was very good! Thanks Becki for the new ideas!
• I’ve finished my Twilight again and
• Being the workaholic that I am almost finished the Geometry curriculum. I still have so much to do!

I love having time to my self to do what I need/want to do!

4th of July

The 4^th of July is one of my top favorite holidays! You wonder why the 4^th of July is my favorite holiday? Well you need to come to the Kaysville Parade. In fact blankets are put out at midnight the morning of July 3^rd and on parade day the blankets are soaked. But hey, we have the perfect shady spot that we have had for as long as I can remember. I love the time that I get to spend with my family.

There has been a family member in the parade for as long as I can remember. Dad is always the diver of one of the fire trucks, softball all-stars, band, Bowman’s, horses, and dance programs.

The Davis High Marching Band is amazing! It is amazing because of the fantastic clarinet player on the end. The band marched in the Centerville parade earlier and also march in the 24th of July parade in Slat Lake. Go Darts!!

After the parade we always go to see dad at the station and get soaked. The kids didn't want to get wet so we took pictures and took care of all of the hurts.

Of course the rest of the day continued with a small family barbeque and fireworks. I love fireworks and the music that is played! What an amazing holiday! LET FREEDOM RING!!

Summer- Where does the time go!

I know you guys are so excited to hear from us again! Summer has just begun for me. One of the things that I looked forward to as a school teacher was to have a three month summer with tons of fun. Well is did not happen this year and probably won’t happen next year either. School got out the end of May and I was asked/forced to teach summer school starting the Monday after school got out. I worked from 9 to 5 Monday through Friday with no breaks not even for lunch. I wasn’t too excited about the whole thing but now that I think about it, I am so very grateful for the blessing of working. There are so many people that are without a job and I am complaining that I have one. I am even more blessed because InTech Collegiate High School (the school I work for) actually had to let the other math teacher go in January. I am also grateful that I was able to do something while Dave was working.

Dave is currently working as an intern at Thermo Fisher. We were so blessed to receive this position. Dave had applied for so many jobs. He applied for jobs that were not engineering, jobs that he was over qualified for and jobs that were down in the Salt Lake area where he would be down there Monday through Friday and come home for the weekend. We are so very blessed that he found a job that is close, that he is working with engineers, and receiving some experience in what he wants to do. He is learning lots and loving it. He works 7 to 4 Monday through Friday.

Though we have had to work all summer, we have had tons of fun. We were able to get work off and go on five day cruise June 20 – June 25 to the Western Caribbean, go to the cabin at Bear Lake, Mack’s Inn, Logan canyon to roast hotdogs and play games, 4^th of July activities, and hang out with friends and family playing.

(I will try to remember to post about these activities!) We love summers!!!

He has soft peach-fuzzy hair that looks blond. He likes to make cute little grunting noises.

They are super cute, but are in the NICU right now getting oxygen. Kari is doing well and will hopefully be coming home on Sunday.

Congratulations Robinette Family. We are so excited for your new arrivals.

We are so sad we live so far away so we don't get to visit very often but look forward to seeing them more this summer.

Happy Halloween!!

Today we still had school but was pretty much a worthless day. Last night was the Halloween Dance so the student body voted to have a late start and still get out early thus, 25 minute classes. (I know what a great school. I am pretty spoiled and love it.) Students were also able to dress up for school - this spells distractions all over to me. It was a pretty fun day. What an exciting weekend! Baby Ellie G James was born Thursday, October 23, 2008 at 2:41 am. She weighed 7 lbs 12 oz. She is beautiful! Congrats James Family!

Dave's birthday is Monday, October 20. I was looking at some other blogs and saw a "Husband Tag" and wanted to join it too!

What is his name? David Scott Lawrence
How long have you been married? almost 18 months
How long did you date? 6 months before we were married (quick but it was right)
How old is he? 23 years
Who eats more? He does
Who said I love you first? He did. It was the first time he had told anyone I love you. He is so sweet!
Who is smarter? He is. He is one of the top in everyone of his classes this semester! He is always willing to help me with a problem that I am having troubles with for my calculus class I am teaching.
Whose temper is worse? Mine, but I am learning to mellow and focus on the positive.
Who does the laundry? Every Saturday we do it together.
Who cooks dinner? I am very spoiled when it comes to this. As a first year teacher I am overwhelmed all the time but when I come home Dave always has dinner either going or waiting for me. This is my favorite time of the day. I get to sit down and talk to my best friend and spend a little bit of time with him.
Who does the dishes? We do it together. One washes and the other drys, puts away and cleans up. I love all the team work that we do!
Who sleeps on the right side of the bed? When you're looking at the bed, I do
Who pays the bills? I do with consulting from Dave.
Who drives when you are together? He does. I am a bad driver.
Who is more stubborn? Definitely me!
Whose parents do you see the most? We are very lucky that our parents live about 5 miles from each other. Every time that we go down we see both.
Who proposed? He did! He lied to me the entire day before he proposed.
Who has more friends? He does but we are growing couple friendships here in Logan which is awesome!
Who has more siblings? I do 5-4
Who wears the pants in the family? I think that we both have a leg.

Dave is such a sweet and tender heart man always making me laugh. I am so very luck to have been able to find him. He is such a blessing in my life and love him dearly. Happy Birthday Sweet heart!

A funny story about school. I was in my USU 1320 Humanities class. The teacher was talking about how it is a Freshmen class but we are all grown up because we are in college. After going though all this a girl raised her hand and asked if she could go to the bathroom. I almost fell out of my seat. I thought it was so funny. I laughed inside but it was funny because it was right after this HUGE speech about how we are all grown up.

We want to thank everyone that helped us move a few weeks ago! With happy helping hands things got done quickly. We started at 9:30 in Ogden left by 11 and arrived to Aggie Village at noon. Trailers, trucks, and the cars were unpacked within an hour. I was so scared to walk through the apartment, boxes everywhere. A week and a half later and things are looking a lot better, we even have office space.

Thanks Family: Lori, Brent, Jana, Scott, Karla, Mont, Jessie, and Jill! You guys are awesome!!!

We are keeping pretty busy here. Dave started his job at Market Place Grill and enjoying it. He can't wait for school to start. I have been organizing my classroom and getting prepared to start teaching. It's been lots of hard work but I am really excited/nervous to start doing what I've dreamed about for years.
We love our ward and all the activities that go on here. We play volleyball Tuesday nights, soccer Wednesday nights and Dave plays basketball Saturday mornings. The people here are very generous and open hearted to us. We love it here.

There were three of us that graduated in Math Education: Sara Buckley, Todd Hellstrom, and me.

Chelsea Graduated!!! She graduated May 2nd from Weber State University in Math Education and ESL (English As A Second Language). We were so excited to see her walk. She willl be teaching up in Logan this coming school year.
